Pennington County property owners who rent homes or other properties for short stays have until Dec. 3, 2026, to secure a required county license or risk daily fines.
County officials said the enforcement deadline applies to vacation and short-term rentals, including properties offered to visitors through online platforms. After Dec. 3, operators who continue renting without a license could face a $200 fine each day until they comply.
The deadline follows a six-month compliance period approved by the Pennington County Board of Commissioners beginning June 3. During that window, the county is giving operators time to complete the licensing process before fines and other enforcement measures begin.
The county’s Planning & Zoning Department plans to send notices to property owners who appear to be running a short-term rental without the required license. Those owners will have until the December deadline to get licensed.
A county short-term rental license costs $150 and remains valid for three years.
To find potentially unlicensed rentals, county officials use information from Deckard Technologies, which reviews publicly available vacation rental listings. According to the county, that data can show whether a property has a license, who owns it, booking activity, and which rental platforms are being used.
The county said the purpose of the deadline is to allow short-term rental operators time to get licensed before penalties take effect.
